Day 6: The Art of Stopping Time

One of my favorite books is “The Art of Stopping Time“.

My neighbor Momma Jo recommended it to me — several times. She’d follow-up to see if I’d gotten a copy. After her umpteenth time asking, she loaned me her copy.

It turned out to be one of the most timely, and impactful, books I’ve read to date. In fact, at one point I brought twenty copies, and gifted them (sometimes to complete strangers).

Written by Pedram Shojai (author of “The Urban Monk”), the book is composed of 100 short chapters. You read a chapter a day, and sometimes there’s a short assignment.

I’ve seen it categorized as “self-help”, but it reads more like a daily devotional that skews spiritual.

For example, the first chapter uses gardening as a metaphor for life.

Imagine your life is a garden. You have limited water and need to leave space for each plant to flourish. Some may be bigger and more important to you than others. Some you may not even like but are obliged to keep there.

Think about what’s important to you. What would make it into your Life Garden? Family? Career? Health? Relationships? Music? What’s important in your life?

Whether you’re looking for a good daily read, or writing prompts for a a 100-day writing challenge, I highly recommend “The Art of Stopping Time”.
